October 31, 2003:

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all enjoying Halloween. For a bit of fun we are dropping 'Scythes' at random locations at random times through the day.

As is normal for holiday drops now, the scythes are untradeable and limited to one per player. The only way to ever get one is to find one today!

If after finding a scythe you lose it, you can get a replacement from the clothes shop. However the shop will only give you a replacement if you manage to find one on the ground today.

Our previous drop has also been changed to work the same way, with the clothes shop offering replacements (rather than it auto appearing in your inventory after you die).

October 29, 2003:

Our esteemed librarian Reldo has contacted us with the following announcement:

"Due to a recent donation from an anonymous benefactor, I am glad to announce that the Royal Library of Varrock has expanded its browsing library slightly, and to accommodate this new space we have moved some more manuscripts from the old archives to the reading rooms.

You will find that we have some new Tales and Histories available for public viewing."

In other news, the benevolent deity Saradomin, who never likes to be outdone, has just sent us the latest installment of the ever popular responses to players' questions in Letters 17 which as usual has been archived for future posterity in the Library of Varrock.

October 25, 2003:

There seems to be an increase in fake emails designed to trick you into giving away your password or recovery questions lately.

The latest fake email appears to come from support@jagex.com and has a copy of our secure login appearing actually IN the email. It looks like we have emailed you our login page in an email.

Of course we don't do this! We only ever send plain text emails, without buttons, without pictures, without attachments, and without links to websites (not even our own). And never asking for your password or any other info.

Due to the number of fake emails being sent we are going to stop using email entirely shortly, and give message-centre reminders in game instead.

If you get an email that appears to be from us, then be very suspicious, delete the email immediately, and then go to runescape.com (not via a link in the email) and check your message centre instead.

October 23, 2003:

Well its nearly Halloween again and we know some players are hoping for a drop like the bunny-ears we did last Easter. However everyone here is now busy working on RS2 to make the 1st-Dec beta date, and we are sort of reluctant to move people back onto RS1 just to create a new Halloween drop.

Since we really cant decide which you would prefer, we have decided to run a poll. Find it HERE.

October 16, 2003:

Our favorite librarian Reldo sent a messenger to let us know that the Library of Varrock has expanded its public viewing area.

Reldo had the following to say:

King Roald of Varrock has gratefully agreed to be Patron to my efforts to create a full, true, and accurate history of this world in which we live. I have made a start by opening two new sections available to the public; the official histories page, and the tales from the tavern.

Please be advised if checking out any manuscripts or documents that they are to be returned on time, and late fees will be deducted at a rate of 2 gold per day.
I also ask visitors to keep the noise down in the research areas, or their library card may be revoked.

You can see for yourself the newly expanded Library of Varrock here.

October 11, 2003:

RuneScape was temporarily offline for about 2 hours this morning for essential maintenance.

We have now passed 5 million user accounts, and therefore I had to make some slight changes to our database to accomodate the vast amount of data this involves.

Due to unexpected complications, I had to reset the master login server. What this means is that anyone who was playing this morning DURING the 2 hour update may find the last few minutes of activity were forgotten. Luckily very few people were affected in this way, and those who were will just find they are standing back where they were when the update started.

I apologize for the inconvenience caused by this maintenance work.

October 1, 2003:

Work on our massive 'RuneScape-2' update has gone very well in the last few weeks, and we feel sufficiently confident in our progress to finally commit to an exact date for the public beta test.

The beta test will begin here on www.runescape.com on the 1st-December-2003. For more info on how the beta will work please refer to our RS2 FAQ

We would like to thank all our current members. Without your support this massive update wouldn't have been possible. In recognition of this members will get first try of the beta on 1st-Dec, with a free-players launch following a few weeks later.

We are now going to focus all our resources on this update to make sure it's ready on time.
