- Start this quest by talking to the librarian in the Varrock
Castle Library (Reldo). Then find and read the book about the Shield of
Arrav (
.gif)
). - Half of the shield is held by the Phoenix Gang, and the other half is held by the Black Arm Gang. A person can only join one of the two gangs, hence the 2 person requirements. Each player needs to join one of the 2 gangs, but not the same gang.

Becoming a Phoenix: Talk to Reldo a second time after reading the book about the shield of Arrav. He will tell you to go ask the fur trader (Baraek) who can be found in the marketplace. Talk to him, and he will tell you the hideout location. Talk to the man near the door of the hideout to receive the entrance task. You must kill a spy (lvl 10 Johnny the Beard ()) located in a bar close to the sword shop. Then take the intelligence report (
)
he
drops and give it to the man back at the hideout. You will then become
a member of the Phoenix gang, and receive a key (
)
(can get multiple copies by
dropping it, asking for another, then picking up the old key) that allows
access to the Phoenix gang weapon stash and the hideout. Go into the
hideout and look for a chest (
)
in the far back room. Search the chest to find half of the shield (). -
Becoming a Black Arm: Talk to the Tramp found wandering at the end of the alley (across from the pub near the sword shop). Ask him about what is down the alley. He will tell you that there is a notorious gang of thieves there. Ask him if he thinks that they will let you join their gang. Then go down the alley and talk to the woman (Katrine) in the building found there. She will agree to let you join if you steal 2 Phoenix crossbows (
). This can be done either by buying them from
the
General Store, or by getting the Phoenix gang key ()
from another player.
If you choose the key route, you must fight and kill the lvl 25 Weapons
Master () before you can take the crossbows. Give
Katrine the crossbows,
and she will give you access to the hideout. Search the cupboard on the
second floor to find half of the shield (
) -
Get the Reward: You and your partner must go and see the Varrock museum curator to receive the ability to get the final reward. You are given 2 certificates (
), each is
worth 600 gp. The King will only pay for 1 certificate per person. - Reward: 1200 gp (600 gp per certificate (you can only get 600 gp from the king)), 1 Quest Point
